This course focuses on the essentials of English linguistics. It provides students with a general perspective concerned with the areas of phonetic, lexical, syntactic, semantic, stylistic, pragmatic and other related issues. It introduces the students to various literature topics reflecting the nature, structure and function of language. Each topic will be accompanied by a selection of relevant readings.

The students will:

1. learn new concept vocabulary and word study. Each word has a definition for them to understand. These words will connect to the Essential Question and topics they are studying.
2. read several fiction and nonfiction selections, answer questions about them ; then, practice the language through several speaking and listening assignments including group discussions and oral presentations.
3. practice Comprehension by answering critical thinking questions that allow them to analyze the texts and relate them to real-life situations.
4. learn English Language conventions.
5. connect to writing by using all the writing traits.

The goal is to offer students a math curriculum that recognizes the competence and energy of middle school students, and addresses the need for intellectually challenging and inclusive mathematics materials.
