This is a yearlong required course and equal to 1 credit. World Literature I develops student competency in English usage and mechanics, oral and written communication, and classical and contemporary literature. Topics of study include poetry, novels, essays, library research skills, short stories, and creative writing. Basic grammar skills are practiced in student writings. Students use analytical and critical thinking skills while examining the various literary forms. Students apply appropriate strategies in developing reading skills for a variety of purposes, in addition to developing an appreciation of the world cultures. They recognize elements of short stories, novels, essays, poems, and plays, and apply listening skills, personal study skills, and principles of Standard English in vocabulary. Additionally, students demonstrate knowledge of language terminology and application of the concepts through speaking and writing.
This is a yearlong required course and equal to 1 credit. This course gives students the fundamental knowledge needed to be successful in high school-level English classes. In this course, students explore the fundamental elements and rules of English grammar for the purpose of strengthening their abilities to communicate effectively with confidence and clarity. Students will identify and correct errors in order to become astute editors of their own writing and gain an appreciation for how knowledge of grammatical principles and precision may enhance individual style and choice. The course focus is largely practical as it builds on hands-on exercises to achieve mastery of sentence structure and meaning. Among the areas the class will review are parts of speech, sentence construction, correct verb forms, pronouns, agreement, punctuation, modifiers, parallelism, and phrases, and clauses. Students work to improve their writing fluency and basic grammatical skills. The written assignments encourage students to apply and test their progress. Essay wiring will offer students illuminating approaches to English usage, style, and syntax. During the course of the year, students focus on mastering the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts. This means that they will be expected to write high school-level essays.

The curriculum in British and World Literature is designed to broaden students’ literary knowledge, deepen their thinking about important topics, develop their communication skills, connect their learning to other classes, and give them multiple opportunities to work with a variety of people on different tasks. Through this course, students become both critical thinkers and analytical writers. They focus on some of the most significant works of the literature of this period and engage in discussions and activities that analyze the structural and stylistic devices of each text.
